About MODIS

Intro

MODIS stands for Management Of Data & Information Systems. It is a department at the Institute for System Programming of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ISP RAS). This direction was among major ones for the whole professional history of older specialists currently working for ISP RAS. The first separated MODIS team was established in late 80s. The area of MODIS’ R&D included relational DBMSs design and development as well as object-based distributed information system technology.

Current R&D area

For the last several years, we have worked on XML data management technologies. We built a set of servers and tools for XML-based data integration named BizQuery. Since 2003, we have been developing a native XML database system called Sedna.  Most recent projects are related to Natural Language Processing, Text Mining, Complex Graph’s Analysis, Information Extraction and Distributed Data Processing with MapReduce. Since 2007, we have been developing toolkit for text mining called Texterra. On the base of Texterra technology, we built content exploration system and its demonstration for blogosphere called Blognoon.

R&D Model

Our R&D model is aimed at development of new technologies and driven by the goal to provide the whole cycle of technology development. The cycle includes the following key phases:

  • Research Phase – consists in theoretical problem study, the result of which is well documented and confirmed by a working prototype.
  • Development Phase – consists in turning beneficial effect (positive results) of research into practical tools.
  • Industrial Project Phase – consists in applying the developed tools in pilot industrial projects. MODIS includes a sub-team that conducts such projects.
  • Support Phase – consists in continuous improvement in response to users’ requests. Support is mainly provided by developers themselves that allows giving support in fast and smart way.

These phases are usually concurrent and have strong effects on each others. It’s achieved by tight team members collaboration and involving the same members in different phases.

Experience obtained conducting activity of all phases is shared with students by means of team member’s taking part in university education activity. University education activity allows us (1) to grow personal who will be able to implement our R&D model; (2) to have a chance to find strong specialists and to offer to them to join our team; (3) to find new interesting ideas in the university community.

MODIS R&D Model is strongly relevant to ISPRAS’ vision that is based on mutual influence of three principal activity components that are Research, Development, and Education.

Revenue Model

The main source of our revenue is project implementation for different research and business organizations. Proceeds from project implementations are invested in development of promising ideas to come up with new project proposals.
